I walked calmly across the street. As soon as I got to my driveway I raced to my house. There was a yell behind me, and a loud bang shook my ears and sent a surge of energy through me. Boom, bang, and chizzzle the deafening bangs made behind me.
“Hey, stop it right now!” the officer cried right as I ducked behind my house door.
It was the morning of July 4. I was very excited for the party we had planned 2 weeks ago when my mom’s voice shattered my thoughts.
“Benett remember to cut the grass before the party,” My mom bellowed.
“I have already done it” I lied.
“Then gather all the fireworks and bring them to the field!” Mom hollered
I raced to the basement and quickly grabbed my fireworks. I dashed to the field and gentaly laid all of them out. I walked inside and plopped down on the couch to watch TV. I was drenched in sweat. That’s how blazing the sun’s rays were. The aroma of my mom’s cooking filled the air. I knew I was going to have a ton of fun that night.
When it was finally time for the party I went outside. No one had arrived at the field in our neighborhood yet. I couldn’t believe how fast the time had flown by that year. It was 7:00 when we finally got started. The temperature had finally dropped. Everyone at the party was older than I, but I really didn’t mind they were extremely kind to me. When the first firework went up a burst ohhs and ahhs filled the air. Pop, boom, Bang! The fireworks erupted. The colors filled the air. It was then that we realized are neighbor’s, the Palmers, hadn’t showed up yet. It was no surprise at all that we didn’t care, nobody really liked the Palmers. They were always cruel having their 2nd grade kids get up at 6:00 and work on their family garden. They would do this all day because the home schooled their 8 sons and daughters. So, we decided to go on without those party-poopers.
After about an hour we decided we should pull out a fire stick. This is a kind of firework that you hold the bottom and light the top. When you lit the top a flame instantly erupted in many different colors. Since they were put out very easily by the windy night we decided to have competition of who could keep their stick burning the longest. My dad one first and said, “I would like to thank my magnificent fire for staying on my stick longer then anyone else’s.”
Then he threw the stick into the air where it burned out. That made me think of another contest. So we had a contest of who could throw their stick the highest without having it burn out. I won the first competition, beating everyone because they threw their stick so hard the wind blew out the fire. When, my neighbor;s fire went out he wasn’t very happy but the second attempt he was thrilled because he had won. After a while we tried another contest. This one was who ever made the coolest picture one. We decided this because if you pulled your stick hard enough the picture would stay for a little while. My neighbor James won this almost every time because he is extoadinary with art.
When the wind died down a kid named JD Hartwig brought down his dirt bike. He grabbed the last fire stick and went as fast as he could making the blue blaze light up the whole field. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen! Then we decided to wrap up with the last of our fireworks. When we had four fireworks left my sister heard a strange ringing from a few blocks away.
When we looked up the street we saw a policeman! That’s what the ringing was! I didn’t know what to do so I took off sprinting.
“What’s going on?” asked the officer.
“Just setting off some fireworks,” replied Mr. Blair (my neighbor).
“Those folks said you were trying to set the field on fire,” the officer explained.
“No, we were just setting a little show.” Commented Mr. Blair
“Hey, stop it right there!” The Officer cried.
A few minutes later the policeman left. I learned that the mean Palmers had called the police. That was one wild forth of July party!
